Blogger's Block...

After a hiatus of more than a month, I have decided I want to add something to my blog….I have been staring into the screen for the past half hour wondering what to write about. A lot has been happening in life lately, mostly on the professional front though. Things have changed. New branch, new place, new team, new clients, new problems, new solutions, new victories and the list goes on and on…All these changes have come like a breath of fresh air into my otherwise mundane life. There is so much to tell, yet I am unable type anything beyond half a sentence. I think I am suffering from Bloggers block…

Russian Folk Tales

I was chatting with a friend and was telling him how much i loved to read the magazine MISHA as a child. The magazine has been out of circulation for a while now. The topic veered onto russian folk tales. Most of the storybooks I had as a kid were Russian folk tales. I happened to remember one story titles "Alyonushka" and googled it. Here's what I found....

The Sunscreen Speech


In August 1997, e-mail enthusiasts burned up cyberspace sending each other the text of a commencement address said to have been delivered by Kurt Vonnegut, author of "Slaughterhouse Five" and other works. It was surely the most popular speech Kurt Vonnegut never wrote or delivered. As it happens, the sunscreen speech was actually a column written by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich. Here is "the speech".

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '98: Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blind side you at 4 PM on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.

Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

My right eye is twitching...

I said: “My right eye is twitching”

They said: “… it is good omen. Something good will happen to you…”

“….right eye blinking??? It is bad luck…..”

“….hmmmm…somebody is gossiping about you…”


Actually, the right eye blinking is just a minor disorder. There are various causes for it, some of which are dry eyes, stress, fatigue, lack of sleep, staring at the computer or TV for a long time, potassium deficiency, a minor nervous system disorder, or just too much of coffee. So the next time your right eye is blinking, just relax, cut out on coffee, and catch a few winks.  Hey! I am yawning. Now what does that mean????????

The Bucket List





While sitting in Vapi and enjoying gujarati thali with a friend, the list of things that I ought to do before I get married was decided. We called it “The Bucket List” cos , for the two of us, getting married was equivalent to kicking the bucket . All that I could put on the list then was:
1. Get a tattoo
2. Go on a holiday alone
The whole point behind this “List” was doing something fun, before all the responsibilities set in. I got a tattoo last October (much to my mom’s dismay) but till date I haven’t found time for that holiday that I wanted to go on.
It has been a year since that list was made and now I have decided to add more items to it. So here’s the new refreshed list:
• Lose weight
• Go on a holiday alone
• Drive across the country
• Get yet another tattoo
• Learn Spanish
• Lose more weight
• Learn to cook
• Go scuba diving
• Learn dancing
• Go paragliding
• Travel the world
• Meet John Abraham

The list is endless…

The 4 letter 'F' word....FATE

For the last couple of hours, I have been reflecting on something that a friend said to me during the day- "It happened because it had to happen". Was it really my fate?? Or maybe I did not try hard enough? Well, I will never ever know. What I know right now is that some four letter 'F' word that supposedly is some unknown power that predetermines events (or so the dictionary says) has finally made me try my hand at writing. Whether it will success is yet another question. Coming back to the topic, does this power really exist or is it another human creation? Something we can put a blame on when we lose the willpower to fight against the odds maybe. I'd really like to think that my future is in my own hands. That I control what happens. I am the creator of my destiny! Sounds good, doesn't it?. The fact however remains that each time I make an attempt to shape my future,some unknown force intervenes and changes the path. So is that what we call fate? It is way past midnight and the answer still eludes me...
